John Spang, freelance cameraman

1983-1995: Studio technician progressing to unit manager, Lancashire College for adult education, Chorley, Lancashire. Built up experience in camera work, lighting, sound and editing. Gained ONC & HNC in electrical & Electronic engineering, Blackburn Technical college. Became manager of the ‘Video Production Unit’ using 3 machine Betacam-SP with vision mixing, 3D effects and multi-format audio recording and editing. Won the ‘Education Television Association’ award.

1996-2003: Setup self employed with studio facilities firstly at Vektor Learning Systems and then at Apple Video Productions, acting mainly as freelance cameraman but also editing for freelance producers/directors. I also spent one season working as Studio Engineering Manager at Blackburn Rovers football club, Ewood park. I was responsible for the 4 camera studio and Gallery engineering when covering the multi-camera match-day shoots and managing live signal feeds to SKY SPORTS and the BBC.

2004-Present day: Decided to concentrate on freelance camera work operating from my home base in Blackburn Lancashire and maintaining a non-linear suite for editing work.

My experience is mainly in the corporate environment working for blue-chip clients although I have filmed many times on Health & Safety, industrial, promotional and conference based productions. I also act as Director of Photography on shoots (DoP).

Over the last couple of years I've jetted around filming for travel companies, many of these jobs involved editing on location, this was done on my laptop and using a media player for programme playout.

Shot on location in France, Italy, Spain, Germany, Budapest, Bratislava, Vienna, Canary Islands, Egypt, Dubai, Kazakhstan and Japan, where I was lighting cameraman and director.

My skills as an electronic/mechanical engineer have been useful on several occasions whilst filming, typically solving a technical issue or getting ‘that extra shot’ because I understand the subject matter. My editing experience
also gives me a good grounding for what to shoot for ‘the edit’.

I have good social/diplomacy skills and integrate well into the working environment, I always adopt a professional attitude when working on behalf of my client.
